Russia helps Europe launch GPS network;

It might be news to the tens of millions of people who use it every day, but the GPS global positioning system is operated by the US military.
For years there’s been no alternative, until now. Both Russia and Europe are both putting their own satellite positioning system online

In the jungles of French Guiana, a huge rocket slowly makes its way to the launch pad, cradled on a rail car.
Space vehicles are nothing new here but the origin of this rocket is.
It’s Russian, part of a groundbreaking partnership with the European Space Agency ESA.
For the first time, a Russian Soyuz rocket is lifting off outside the former Soviet Union, and the first cargo, the first two satellites for Europe’s answer to America’s GPS – the Galileo satellite positioning system.

Several hundred Russians watched with satisfaction — and relief — as a Soyuz rocket successfully blasted off from French Guiana bearing the first two satellites in Europe’s Galileo global positioning system.
The rocket lifted off at 7:30 a.m. Friday from the base near Kourou, French Guiana, on the northeast coast of South America, and the Galileo satellites separated four hours later.
“Soyuz is only the beginning of a cooperation that will go much further,” Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov said.
In the days preceding the launch, a 400-member Russian delegation swamped the limited hotel facilities of Kourou, which has a population of 25,000.

Global ad industry eyes boost from mobile devices;

(Reuters) – The global advertising industry is eager to capitalize on booming use of mobile phones for Internet access as more enhanced devices are coming to the market to get more consumers reachable online.

The Soyuz Consultation Committee;

The Soyuz Consultation Committee, comprising representatives of the Russian space agency Roscosmos, the European Space Agency (ESA), the French space agency CNES and Arianespace, met on Tuesday, 11 May in French Guiana. It confirmed that the inaugural launch of Soyuz from the Guiana Space Centre would take place during the fourth quarter of 2010.

Happy 10th GPS (1st May 2000)

Many of you may not have heard of Selective Availability (SA). But for those of us who were fortunate enough to own a GPS receiver prior to 2000, SA was a very big deal indeed! SA was a feature of the military GPS network (NAVSTAR is a US military funded and operated system) that added an intentional error to the GPS signal made available to non-military users. This error was added so as to degrade the accuracy of the GPS signal and was intended to preclude the use of civilian GPS receivers by enemy forces.

It was the removal of SA that made mapping based GPS a viable service and initiated the explosion in the mapping based navigation devices that we all benefit from today.
